Committee instrumental in contributing to species protection and recovery
TORONTO, ON (March 23, 2022) – GEI’s Shannon Catton has been appointed by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and the Executive Council of Ontario to serve as a member of the Committee on the Status of Species at Risk in Ontario (COSSARO). COSSARO is an independent committee of experts who consider which plants and animals should be listed as at risk in the province of Ontario. The committee’s 12 members bring expertise in scientific disciplines or community knowledge or Aboriginal traditional knowledge.
Shannon will play an instrumental role in contributing to the protection and recovery of species at risk in Ontario.
“I am honored and excited about the opportunity to join COSSARO in order to make tangible impacts to at risk species and habitats in Ontario,” says Shannon. “This committee has a diverse makeup, with representation from academia, as well as the public and private sectors. These different perspectives will allow us to develop a wholistic approach to helping a variety of species.”
Shannon brings more than a decade of experience working on environmental planning and permitting approvals, impact assessment studies, natural heritage reviews, ecological restoration, and species at risk assignments for various private interests. Shannon has provided environmental expertise to mineral aggregate resource expansions, major oil and gas pipeline projects, power transmission and electricity infrastructure renewal projects, wind and solar power project approvals, and various sub-watershed studies and community developments.
